What makes up the petrol price in Kolkata

Every litre of petrol in Kolkata carries two central charges that are the same across India, plus West Bengal’s own state tax on top. West Bengal levies approximately 25% + ₹1,000 cess on petrol, and that state slab is the single biggest reason Kolkata prices differ from a city like Delhi.

ComponentAmount (₹/litre)
Base price (ex-refinery)~56.00
Central excise duty19.90
West Bengal state tax (VAT/cess)~33.74
Dealer commission~3.87
Total pump price~113.51

The base price and excise duty are fixed nationally. State tax is the variable layer, so two cities can sell the same fuel at very different pump prices purely because of state politics.

Petrol price history in Kolkata (recent months)

MonthPetrol (₹/L)Diesel (₹/L)
June 2026113.5199.82
May 2026113.5199.82
April 2026113.5199.82
March 2026113.5199.82
February 2026113.5199.82

Pump prices across India have been broadly stable since the May 2022 excise cut, when fuel was reduced by about ₹8/litre nationally. Daily revisions by the oil marketing companies have stayed small since then, so the Kolkata figure moves only in paise on most days.

Monthly fuel cost for Kolkata commuters

At ₹113.51/litre, here is what 1,000 km a month costs on common vehicles. The formula is simple: monthly fuel cost = (monthly km ÷ mileage) × petrol price.

Hyundai Creta (petrol)15 km/L₹7,567
Royal Enfield 35035 km/L₹3,243
