Run through this checklist first. It’s the fast version of everything below: what “automated BOL” actually looks like line by line.
A bill of lading gets created on every single US ocean shipment, which makes it the highest-frequency document a forwarder produces, and one of the easiest to automate because almost nothing on it is new information.
Why BOL is the obvious automation target
By the time a BOL needs to be issued, the shipment record already has the shipper, consignee, container numbers, seal numbers, cargo description, and weight, all captured at booking or during container loading. Manual BOL creation means retyping fields that already exist somewhere else in the same file. On a shipment that needs both a Master BOL (carrier to forwarder) and a House BOL (forwarder to shipper), that’s the same retyping exercise twice.
Where BOL errors actually cause problems
A BOL that doesn’t match the commercial invoice or packing list is one of the most common reasons documents get rejected under a letter of credit, banks check for exact consistency, not approximate agreement. Automating BOL generation from the same shipment record that produced the invoice and packing list removes the chance of a typo creating a mismatch between documents that are supposed to describe the same cargo.
Master vs House BOL
The Master BOL runs between the ocean carrier and the forwarder (or NVOCC); the House BOL runs between the forwarder and the actual shipper or consignee. They carry different parties and sometimes different cargo descriptions if a forwarder is consolidating multiple shippers into one container. Automated BOL generation needs to handle both documents from the same underlying shipment data, not just one.
CargoEZ generates Master and House BOLs straight from the shipment record, with marks, container numbers and seals pre-filled from booking and container loading.
Check your BOL against the export documentation checklist and the container loading checklist for the marks and seal numbers it needs to match, and see how to automate freight forwarding workflows for the bigger picture.
