Most container damage claims trace back to how the container was loaded, not what happened in transit. A few minutes checking this before the doors close saves a much longer claims process later.
Weight distribution isn’t just a safety issue
An unevenly loaded container can fail axle weight limits on the trucking leg even if the total container weight is fine, leading to a fine or a refused pickup at the terminal. Spread weight across the floor and keep the heaviest cargo low and centered, not stacked at one end.
The seal is your proof of custody
A high-security bolt seal applied and photographed before the doors close is the single best piece of evidence if cargo goes missing in transit. Record the seal number on the bill of lading and compare it against the seal on arrival, if the numbers don’t match, that’s evidence the container was opened somewhere along the route.
Once the container’s loaded, check your freight class and landed cost if this is an import shipment headed to the US.
