Most SIP articles tell you to start small and stay consistent. That’s fine advice. What they skip is the part where your salary goes up every April and your SIP stays stuck at the number you picked three years ago.

A step-up SIP fixes that. You raise the SIP by a fixed percentage each year (5%, 10%, whatever matches your increment), and the compounding effect is brutal in a good way. The calculator below shows you exactly how much bigger your corpus gets when you step up versus staying flat.

Why step-up changes the math so dramatically

A flat ₹10,000 SIP at 12% for 20 years gives you about ₹1 crore. Same SIP, same return, but with a 10% annual step-up? The corpus jumps to roughly ₹1.95 crore. Almost double, from a behaviour change that costs you nothing extra in year one.

The reason is straightforward. In a flat SIP, your later years contribute the same nominal amount as year one, which is worth less in real terms after inflation. A 10% step-up roughly tracks the average salary increment in India’s private sector, so you are putting in the same real percentage of income year after year. The corpus is bigger because more actual rupees are invested during the years when they have the most compounding runway ahead.

Year 20 of a step-up SIP sees monthly contributions of ₹10,000 × 1.1¹⁹ = ₹61,159. Those 12 payments in year 20 don’t compound much (only the remainder of the tenure), but years 2 through 15 all see higher-than-flat contributions with significant compounding time left. That is where the gap opens up.

The formula under the hood

The calculator computes FV year by year. For year k (starting at 0):

  • SIP that year = P × (1 + g)^k, where g is annual step-up rate
  • Each year’s 12 monthly SIPs are treated as a standard SIP annuity
  • That year’s FV is then compounded forward for the remaining (n − k − 1) years

Mathematically:

FV = Σ [ P(1+g)^k × ((1+i)^12 − 1)/i × (1+i) × (1+i)^((n−k−1)×12) ]

where i = monthly rate = annual rate ÷ 12 ÷ 100 and the sum runs from k = 0 to n − 1.

This is the standard begin-of-month SIP convention used by AMFI and every major Indian AMC.

The jump from 5% to 10% step-up is nearly 3x the jump from 0% to 5%. The marginal value of a slightly higher step-up rate is massive because compounding amplifies the difference across decades.

What step-up % to use

Most people in salaried jobs get 8–15% increments. Using 10% as a default is reasonable for IT, banking, pharma, and most mid-market private sector roles. Government employees on pay commissions can use 5–7% (increments are smaller but more predictable).

One thing to watch: if you are close to the salary band ceiling in your current role, increment percentages drop. Factor that in rather than blindly assuming 10% forever. Even 5% step-up outperforms flat SIP by a large margin over 15+ years.

Worked example: Karthik in Pune, age 28

Karthik earns ₹80,000/month in a software company in Pune. He starts a ₹8,000 SIP in a Nifty 50 index fund. Each April he gets a 10% raise and bumps his SIP by the same 10%. He plans to retire at 60, giving him 32 years.

Using this calculator (12% return, 10% step-up):

  • Year 1 SIP: ₹8,000/month
  • Year 10 SIP: ₹20,748/month
  • Year 20 SIP: ₹53,840/month
  • Final corpus at year 32: approx ₹8.7 crore

The same ₹8,000 flat SIP for 32 years at 12% produces about ₹3.4 crore. Step-up more than doubles the outcome on the exact same starting commitment.

Frequently asked questions

Can I set different step-up percentages for different years?

No standard calculator (including this one) supports variable step-up by year. The workaround is to compute in two phases: run the calculator for the first phase with one step-up rate, then use the resulting corpus as a starting value for a fresh calculation. Most people don’t need this precision, though. A constant 8–10% is accurate enough for planning purposes.

Does the AMC automatically step up my SIP?

Most major AMCs (SBI, HDFC, Axis, Mirae, UTI, Nippon) support a “SIP Instal Growth” or “Top-up SIP” feature where you set an annual increment percentage at the time of mandate registration. CAMS and KFintech both support it. You don’t have to cancel and restart. Check the SIP registration form for a “step-up amount” or “top-up %” field.

What if I miss a step-up year?

The calculator assumes every year’s increment happens. In practice missing one year matters less than you think. If your corpus is short at year 10, you can compensate with a larger one-time step-up the following year. The damage from missing one step is far less than the damage from stopping the SIP entirely.

Is step-up SIP better than lumpsum?

Lumpsum beats SIP about 65% of the time historically because more money is in the market longer. Step-up SIP is not a replacement for lumpsum investing; it is a systematic way to deploy incrementally growing income. If you receive a large bonus, invest it as a lumpsum. Your monthly salary increment goes into the step-up SIP. Both together is the right answer.
